Fate, life is really all about the mystery of fate, and faith. Mary Kathleen, known to most of you as Mary, is home working with her mother managing (cooking) at the families general store and deli/bakery in Tupper Lake, NY. She's been traveling all over, from the western states to Alaska & Hawaii. Hiking, swimming and skiing while relishing the beauty of the national parks and any place that you can escape the crowds. Mary's stop in Tupper Lake is planned to be brief; she is loyal to her family but the mountains are calling. Stephen returned to Tupper Lake last fall to hunt with old friends and found the cabin he owned years ago is for sale by the people he sold it to. He made an offer, they accepted (and laughed) and he arrived in Tupper Lake on June 8. As with all excursions, it is always the details that trip you up. Stephen bought a new boat, motor, trailer and rented a nice truck for the trip and forgot oil to mix with the gas. Thinking quickly he remembered there was a chain saw store - Larkin's Husquevarna Shop - surely they will have motor oil. A simple hunt for the things we think we need leads down the most interesting paths, to things we didn't even know we wanted. Where once stood a chain saw shop, now stood a bakery, deli and Mary. She suggested the special, Stephens favorite Sandwich, a Reuben. The next day it was a Cuban, and pretty quickly a lot of (delicious) vegetable sandwiches. Maybe her food, maybe the conversation, maybe the fancy apron & hat. Maybe his smile, maybe the jokes, maybe a cabin hidden off and away. Sometimes the unexpected things are better than our grandest plans. And when we find them, they are like lost thoughts. Chapters unread. And when you live them, they feel like home.
