Newport Beach is home to some wonderful beaches, including Crystal Cove State Park, Corona Del Mar (Big Corona), Balboa Island etc.
Orange County Museum of Art
OCMA is a great stop for a culture hot spot! As an architect-in-training, this building recently got a really beautiful facelift. It's worth noting that OCMA is right across from some South Coast Plaza, one of the largest malls on the western seaboard, and a great place to wander around.
Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve
This is a great destination for a good long walk/hike. Locals refer to it as the "Back Bay"
Disneyland Park
I'll be honest, it's a full-day wallet crusher, but if you've never experienced Disneyland and you're here for a few days, definitely worth at least considering.
San Juan Capistrano
If you're here a few days and you're a history buff - touring a local Mission is always a must see. San Juan is also smack in the middle of the adorable town, great for shopping and wandering around.
