How We Got Started

We had always been familiar with each other from growing up in the same area. We began talking on the phone prior to our first date, and quickly became friends. At the time, Mary was living in Angier and Brett was living in Plainview. Brett describes it as "something told me I had to go see Mary Grey". Our last first date was June 18, 2024. It was on a Tuesday and we couldn't stop talking and laughing. Then came another date on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday - and by that Saturday I knew he was the one. We've been inseparable since that first date, and we never stopped talking and laughing.

How Brett Proposed

I will start this by saying I was completely surprised! On a Saturday in August, Brett told me to pick a place to eat that night (this wasn't unusual for a Saturday night). It just so happened, that I picked Alfredo's in Clinton, where my parents also were that night for a friend's birthday party. We ate at Alfredo's, then went to say good-bye to my parents before we left. We ended up socializing until almost everyone in the party left, and by then it was 9pm. My mama, Teresa, asked if we would stop by the house and 'pick up some homemade peanut butter'. Brett said yes of course. I thought it was crazy to pick up homemade peanut butter at 9:30 at night, and was ready to go to bed. My exact words were “Mama suckered you”. Luckily, Brett talked me into it — going on this unusual 9:30 late night peanut butter pick-up. When we got to my parents home, Brett proposed to me in the living room of the house I grew up in, infront of the two people who loved me before I was even born. I couldn't have asked for anything better. Thank God for homemade peanut butter!
