How We Met

A Classic DePauw Tale

The official first time we met was on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th, 2018, but the introduction made by a mutual friend didn't stick. Seven months later, a different mutual friend connected us again at a college party, and this time it stuck. If you're keeping track of our major relationship dates, you'll notice that we had our County Clerk's Office wedding exactly two years later on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th, 2020!

First Date

Monon to India Palace

Our first date was also the day of the famous DePauw vs. Wabash Monon Bell football game in November 2018. Jim went to the game, but Mary had to study for a big Biochemistry exam happening the following Monday. Still, that night Jim took Mary to his favorite, childhood, Indian restaurant in Indianapolis, India Palace. We had a blast and were able to connect with each other on a deeper level surrounded by Mango Lassis and Tikka Masala.

First Adventure

Delta Upsilon Fall Formal - Cincinnati 11/17/18

We were fortunate enough to attend the Delta Upsilon Fall Formal in Cincinnati in 2018. On our first adventure, we road-tripped from DePauw to Cincinnati and visited some of Mary's family friends. While visiting, one of them asked, "So are you dates to this event or are you dating?" Mary's answer, "Well it's an event!" But later that night we made it official! On November 17th, 2018, we officially started dating! The Formal dance that night was a celebration of the start of our relationship and serves as a reminder of where we started while being excited for the next adventure that is always right around the corner!

Exploring San Francisco Together

Jim's First Visit to Mary's Hometown

After a summer spent in Indiana together working, Jim joined Mary for two action-packed, leisurely weeks in the Bay before the start of the 2019-2020 Academic School Year. Highlights of this trip include: A day spent at San Francisco's Music Festival, Outside Lands, multiple trips to the Marin Headlands and other Bay Area viewpoints, a Japanese Bathhouse extravaganza, visiting both sides of the family, and so much more! Jim fell in love with the places Mary grew up at, a feeling of home.

Our Elopement

Married During a Pandemic

On March 11th, 2020, DePauw University sent an email informing everyone on campus that they had to evacuate due to the dangers of social gatherings at the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic. When we got the email, with just a glance, we both knew what needed to happen. We could not bare the thought of entering a lockdown without being married to each other. Jim proposed right away with the Claddagh Ring he had given Mary as a promise ring for a birthday gift in 2019. It was even more fitting since Jim was going to propose in the summer of 2020, so why delay the inevitable? Following a hectic week of moving out of DePauw and moving into our apartment in Plainfield, we got married on March 17th, 2020! Even with County Clerk's Offices closing all over the state, love prevailed and we were able to get married in downtown Indianapolis. We were officially married to the loves of our lives!
