After having some classes together Katie and Riley were formally introduced through one of Katie's roommates. On MEA weekend when everyone had left campus, Riley asked Katie (who happened to have a car and was hanging around campus) to go to Punch Pizza. After eating lunch Katie invited Riley back to her townhome on campus, they shared a kiss, and the rest is history! What started out as a friendly lunch turned into a love story!

Katie's sisters had a hockey tournament in Duluth and Katie's dad Pat convinced her to drive up with him and his mom Jewell on Saturday Morning to watch their game. Riley (who had been living in Colorado for work) told Katie he was going to a cabin for the weekend so he wouldn't have great service. When they got to Duluth Pat told them they were meeting Katie's mom Kelli, her mom Cindy, and Katie's brother Carver (who had been up in Duluth since the night before) at the marine museum. They spent about 5 minutes in the museum which was suspicious to Katie because she knew her Dad loves museums. Katie's family then suggests they walk down the pier. The pier in Duluth is a place that Katie and Riley really enjoy in fact Riley's screen saver is a picture of Katie on the pier and as Katie and her family were walking down the pier Katie sent a picture to Riley of it! As they were walking down the Pier Katie saw Riley come out from behind the Lighthouse! Katie froze as she was in complete shock to see Riley in Minnesota! Riley called Katie over to him as she was still frozen and then he got down on one knee and proposed!
