One night, as Allie and Hannah were rollerblading through uptown, wine in tow, Levi was hanging around his apartment waiting for some random girls to arrive who Evan and Leibold had invited over for a game night. Although he had never played Catan, Levi picked it up quickly and, to Hannah’s dismay, won the game. If you’ve played Catan with us since, you’re probably asking how a marriage sprouted from something that now often ends in bickering over the correct rules. Suffice it to say, we’re both rather competitive. Against all odds, the story goes on. We laughed and played games into the early morning. By the end of the night, we had the entire summer planned with activities. Hannah’s ability to plan amazed (and honestly, intimidated) Levi. Over the next few weeks, Evan, Allie, and the two of us became our own little Covid bubble and started hanging out pretty frequently. Hannah was drawn to Levi’s goofy personality, kindness, and lighthearted outlook on life. Although Levi was interested, he had been told that Hannah had a boyfriend. That didn’t stop him from trying to flirt a little whenever we were together. After about a month of this, Levi thought it was odd that Hannah never brought up the alleged boyfriend and that she was spending so much time with them. After a random Tuesday night of rollerblading, sake, and Mario Kart, Levi felt like his flirting was finally reciprocated. He realized he was misinformed about said boyfriend, and we had our first date set for the following day: paddle boarding around Lake of the Isles! We made so many memories that summer - date nights at Nico’s Tacos, hikes around the state, camping at Apple River, and of course, more Catan. Knowing Levi would soon be moving to Chicago, we needed to be all in or all out. Thankfully, we were both full speed ahead and ready to take on a long-distance relationship. Prior to Levi’s move, we were able to meet one another’s families. Almost the second Hannah stepped into the Martinka house, Grandpa Tjossem asked if she liked football - the real test to see if we were a lasting fit. Unaware of the magnitude of this question, Hannah said she enjoyed watching games at the bar with her friends. Not a perfect answer, but a passing grade. If not at that moment, she thinks she eventually won Ann and Bob over with her love for card games. To Levi’s delight, Hannah’s brothers were just as competitive as him and could yap endlessly about sports - he fit right in. Hannah now catches Levi singing the same tunes as Fred and occasionally throwing in a “funsie.com” comment thanks to Molly. COVID came to our rescue again during long distance. Hannah’s work and most of Levi’s schooling was online, which allowed us longer visits to see each other. In Chicago, we were building a new life—exploring Levi’s new home city, making an amazing group of new friends, and adopting Freya! 🐈⬛ In July of 2021, Fred and Molly helped Hannah relocate to Chicago, where we moved into our first shared home. Three years passed of exploring Chicago's infinite restaurants and bars, admittedly more dramatic game nights, and still (lots of) studying. Since then, we moved to Milwaukee for a year, where we were able to reconnect with old friends, explore great beer gardens and farmers markets, and get engaged (!!) before departing for the South! Now we’re settled into Tampa, Florida, exploring beaches and coffee shops, making more new friends, hosting visitors, and, to our surprise, even missing the cold. We’re happy to report Puppy and Freya are almost friends—after only five short years of living together! We love the life we’re building together and want to thank you all for being part of our story in some way.
