Who are these guys?
When a woman from Livigno marries someone from outside the town, the groom is expected to pay a "tribute" to the local young people. A few days before the wedding, the members of this group, called "Serra" visit the bride's home for a lively celebration with her family and the groom, complete with food and drinks. At a certain point during the evening, everyone leaves the room, leaving the groom alone with the Serra to begin the negotiation. They test the groom’s knowledge of Livigno’s history and traditions before moving on to negotiate the "price" for the bride. On the wedding day, the Serra will be there, dressed in traditional costumes. They prepare a ceremonial ribbon for the newlyweds to cut as they exit the church. Outside, they host a small reception with food and drinks, marking the official start of the festivities. If you'd like to know more about this unique Livigno tradition please ask the Serra guys during the wedding, they'll be there ready to celebrate with us!
All together to the reception
In Livigno, it’s a local tradition to travel to the reception together as a group. The first car is for the newlyweds, followed by all the guests in a procession. Guests' cars are decorated with white ribbons, and everyone drives together through the town in a festive convoy. If you choose to RSVP for a spot on our shuttle, you can join the procession that way. If you have a rental car, feel free to join the convoy as we make our way through the streets of Livigno!
How to end the party
In Livigno, at the end of the wedding festivities, the bride prepares rosumeda for the last remaining guests. It’s a sweet, frothy cream made from eggs, sugar, and wine. Traditionally, guests are invited to the bride and groom’s home to enjoy the rosumeda at the end of the night, but since traveling back to Connecticut would be a bit tricky, we’ll be serving it at the reception venue. Martina has never made it before, but she promises to give it her best shot, with some help from her married friends!
Singing during dinner
In Livigno, and across the Alpine regions, traditional mountain songs are quite popular. During the wedding dinner, guests and the Serra group often sing these folk songs, accompanied by the sound of the accordion. Even if you're not familiar with the songs, don’t be shy—let yourself be carried away by the rhythm of the Alpine chants!
