One of the most fun aspects of Fairfield Beach are the drastic differences in the landscape between high and low tide. At high tide, a trip out to the lighthouse is a medium-long paddling trip, but at low tide, you can nearly walk the whole distance. From lighthouse point the walk out on Penfield Reef to its terminus is about two miles round trip. On the reef you can search through tide pools looking for unusual sea creatures, comb for sea glass, or cast for striped bass. At the end of the reef a good eye can spot the skyscrapers in Manhattan. It's important to keep an eye on the clock and watch the tide as it returns so you don't have an impromptu swim! The best place to keep track of the tide is at https://www.usharbors.com/harbor/connecticut/bridgeport-ct/tides/ Phone service is usually good for the full length of the walk.
The salt marsh of Pine Creek is a great place to hike around and watch for great blue herons, ospreys, great egrets and numerous other cool wading birds. It's also Martha and Rick's favorite place to watch the sunset in Fairfield!
Right next door to our reception venue Penfield Beach is the perfect place to soak up some sun for an afternoon!
