One way to avoid that is to bring cash! Cash can be converted directly at the airport upon arrival in Portugal or you can find many places in Lisbon that will likely offer you a better conversion rate. You will always need your passport for any sort of money conversion. Debit cards work at any ATM. Comfy shoes--lots of hills. You will get a workout if you walk everywhere. Ladies, don't bother with the cute flats. Raincoat--always as a backup. Sunnies, sunscreen, swimsuit and a hat--in case we end up at the beach! Travel charger adapter--many hotels now have USB connections, but just in case, a converter with a European adapter is necessary.
