Melanie had been off Hinge for a few months as she was having no luck and decided it was pointless. However, it was June of 2020 and sitting in her backyard filled with boredom she decided to redownload it for just the day. After being in a long distance relationship in college, Melanie set her radius to only 10 miles because she did not want to deal with any traveling. As she was updating her profile she reached the prompt "You can't convince me that...." Melanie had recently binge watched Tiger King so she put "You can't convince me that Carole Baskin didn't kill her husband." Because Melanie was just playing on the app for the day, she didn't really read the profiles carefully. Little did she know, she swiped for a guy that's profile was all about his love of baseball and the Yankees (Melanie hated baseball so she never would have swiped for this guy if she has read his profile properly). Melanie and this guy (Shawn) had matched. Not long after Shawn messaged Melanie about Carole Baskin. He was funny and they quickly got to talking. Shawn asked for Melanie's number. Melanie liked how funny and cute he was and how close by he was (according to his profile he lived in Totowa- the town next door) so she gave him her number. Shawn asked Melanie to hang out. But what would they do? It was 2020 and everything was shut down. Melanie lived on Packanack Lake and recommended they go on a walk. They made plans to go on a walk in a week. But Melanie was still annoyed from past Hinge experiences that she decided to only text Shawn back but not text him first-she was tired of putting so much effort. Shawn did not know that Melanie was tired of putting in the effort but instead thought she may not be that interested. Shawn considered cancelling the date. Melanie also considered canceling the date because she thought it was pointless as the meetups always had been. But for some reason neither of them cancelled. Shawn drove half an hour to get to Packanack Lake because he had forgotten to update his profile to Oak Ridge where he at the time lived. Oak Ridge was outside of the 10 mile radius Melanie had set so if he had updated it-they never would have connected. As Melanie and Shawn walked around the lake, they instantly felt connected. They told each other things that they never normally would share on a first date. They told each other that they felt like they knew each other for ages even though they just met. They learned of shared interests and even that their sisters have the same birthday. After that night, their connection only grew.
