From Blind Date to the Altar

One slow day at work, Matt was chatting with a co-worker, Skip, when the conversation took an unexpected turn. Skip asked if Matt was dating anyone, and when Matt replied that he was single and Covid had made it difficult to meet people, Skip, ever the matchmaker, took it upon himself to play Cupid. "I’ve got a niece," Skip said, "and I think you two might really hit it off." Matt, intrigued but cautious, agreed to give it a shot and said he’d give her a call. Skip assured him he’d check with his niece first and then pass along her number. That evening, Jennifer received an unusual call from her Uncle Skip. It wasn’t like him to call out of the blue, but when she answered, he excitedly told her about a "nice young man" he worked with named Matt. He described Matt’s love for the outdoors, how grounded he was, and that he thought they’d get along well. Intrigued, Jennifer agreed to let Matt call her. The next day, Skip handed Matt Jennifer’s number at work and gave him one very specific instruction: "Call her. Don’t text." Matt wasn’t sure why Skip was so adamant about the phone call, but he followed the request. Nervous, Matt told his friends about the setup and his confusion about why he couldn’t just text her to set something up. They, too, found it strange that anyone would want to actually talk on the phone instead of texting. Meanwhile, Jennifer was just as puzzled. Who calls people they don’t know? It was 2021, after all, and texting was the norm. Still, she figured she’d roll with it. A couple of days later, after work, Matt called Jennifer for the first time. Their conversation flowed surprisingly well, lasting for hours. They made plans to meet for lunch that weekend. Just before hanging up, Matt asked, "So, why did you want me to call you, instead of just texting?" Jennifer laughed and replied, "I didn’t! I thought you wanted to talk on the phone." They both chuckled at their generational miscommunication, but felt grateful for the unexpected connection. A few days later, in March 2021, Matt and Jennifer met at Barrio Tacos in Kent for their first blind date. They were both nervous, and as if the anticipation wasn’t enough, there was a wait for a table. So, they decided to take a walk around downtown Kent to pass the time and talk. By the time they received the text saying their table was ready, they were both more at ease. The lunch was enjoyable, and they parted ways with plans to see each other again. Fast forward to August 2025. Matt decided to recreate their first date as a surprise. He and Jennifer were meeting their friend, John, for lunch at Barrio. When they arrived, John suggested they take a walk before they ate. So, Matt and Jennifer retraced their steps through downtown Kent, reminiscing about that nervous but exciting day nearly five years ago. When they reached the end of the path, Matt stopped, turned to Jennifer, and got down on one knee. "Will you marry me?" he asked. With a smile, Jennifer said yes. Neither Jennifer nor Matt could have predicted where that blind date would lead, but both were incredibly grateful they took a chance on each other. And, of course, they both owe a special thanks to Uncle Skip.
