How We Met

Online Apps Actually Work...

Whenever we share that we met through a dating app, folks are always surprised. In a world of online dating, it feels like there are a million ways for a first date to go wrong. In our case, there are so many things that went right. To be honest, Elizabeth gets all the credit for the success of our date. Elizabeth reached out to me through OkCupid, an online dating service, and was VERY direct. I often say that Elizabeth was not messing around. Her first message to me was, "Hi, I think you're cute. Would you like to have tea? Even if things don't work out romantically, I think we could at least be friends." Let's be real. She had me at "let's have tea." We met each other in Meridian Hill Park in Washington, DC. It was a chilly day in December, but we decided to have tea and walk through the park. I'm not quite sure how Elizabeth made it to the date, considering she was dog walking and had a flat tire on the way. Nevertheless, she made it and we walked the park for what felt like hours. Almost two years later, we got engaged in the same spot where we met for our first date. Love at first message, perhaps?

The Engagement

July 15th, 2017 & November 4th, 2017

Marjorie and Elizabeth each had their own special ways of asking each other the big question. Marjorie planned a surprise "flash mob" proposal at the location of their first date, Meridian Hill Park, complete with rose petals and sparkling cider. Elizabeth planned a very clever surprise that featured a fake hike that turned into a trip to the zoo to meet a beautiful and goofy little sloth named Bean. Marjorie loves sloths, and was enamored with not only the sloth, but Elizabeth's clever surprise to propose. What makes both proposals special is that both included the people who are are closest to Marjorie and Elizabeth to share in the special moments.
