El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, and one of Puerto Rico's most beloved natural gems. The park has a very diverse ecosystem, with hundreds of unique plant and animal species, including Puerto Rico's famous coquí frog. Don't miss cooling off in the natural pools and be sure to hike to Yokahú Observation Tower for some great photos! Before your visit, check the El Yunque website for the latest information about weather, park closures, and health and safety protocols.
Playa La Posita is probably one of the better-known beaches in Piñones because of its accessibility. It's right on PR-187, and one of its distinctive attributes is that a long breakwater hinders the intense Atlantic waves from crashing into "La Posita", which translates as the pool, or the puddle. Its waters are similar to those of a pool: calm and cool, perfect for bathing without having to struggle with the waves' intensity. Moreover, you can park in front of the beach, and, across the PR-187, you can grab a bite in some of Piñones' best beach shacks. Our favorite thing to do is to stop for a cold, fresh coconut and an empanadilla de carne or jueyes (crab) at one of the many kiosks in Piñones on the side of the road.
Ocean Park is where the locals hang. Eric and I have definitely shared a couple (plus some) Medalla beers here. It's less crowded than other beaches and is conveniently located between Condado and Isla Verde.
What is it: By day it’s Plaza del Mercado, a century-old farmers’ market, but, by night, this is La Placita, a lively gathering place for locals. Why go: The big attraction is the concentration of popular bars and restaurants that line the streets around the small plaza. From sidewalk vendors serving cocktails in to-go cups to salsa dance halls and Jose Enrique’s fine-dining restaurant, La Placita is a one-stop shop for fun. Most nights the action feels like a festive street party, especially on Thursdays and Fridays.

La Parguera is a bioluminescent bay found in the southern town of Lajas— a two-hour drive from San Juan. One of three bioluminescent bays found along Puerto Rico's coastline, the bay's glowing effect is made possible by micro-organisms called dinoflagellates, which emit a short burst of light when the water is agitated. Various tour companies offer nightly kayak or boat trips to explore the bay's waters. Contrary to the other two bio bays found in Puerto Rico, La Parguera is the only one where swimming in the vivid waters is allowed, so don't forget to pack your bathing suit.
