Michelin rated as one of the best BBQ joints in CA and definitely our favorite. It's super casual outdoor seating but very popular (people tend to line up about an hour before opening). We recommend a little of everything, especially their brisket, ribs, and banana bread pudding. Fun note: this is the spot where Marie once tried to fight a cactus (and lost).
A great restaurant and shopping collective to explore - adjacent to the historic Los Rios street which also has tons of unique shops. We recommend the steak sandwich at La Vaquera, a burger or wood-fired ribeye at Finca and a cocktail at Capo Leisure House. There's also great ice cream (McConnell's), other snacks inside the main hall, and great coffee at the nearby Hidden House Coffee on Los Rios street.
Tons of shops, restaurants and art galleries to explore on Forest Ave. and the adjacent streets. We usually grab coffee and a bite, then walk up the beach to the Heisler Park trail, which is a must. The paved trail runs along the cliff overlooking the ocean, is beautifully curated with local artwork, and has (what we think) are the absolute BEST ocean views in all of So Cal. Bonus points if you catch the sunset at Cliff Point and walk 5 min to the Royal Hawaiian for one of the best Mai Tais or Lapu Lapus you've ever had. Other notable spots here are: South of Nick's, Moulin, Zinc Cafe, Wyland Galleries, Larsen bar (at the Hotel Laguna), Nick's, Kush Fine Art, Gelato Paradiso, The Deck, 1000 Steps Beach (below), Top of the World hiking trail . . .
We promise it's not actually 1,000 stairs down to the beach . . . but it's definitely a good workout and well worth it for the view! If you walk south to the end of the beach, you'll run into the explorable sea caves and tide pools. We dare you to touch the sea anemones :)
Marie and Rob's favorite after-hike meal overlooking the ocean in Crystal Cove. They have fresh-caught local fish (yellowtail and bluefin tuna), make amazing poke and massive grilled fish burritos. Marie's favorite is the hot cioppino soup and sushi and Rob usually goes for the ahi poke or premium salmon burrito. We recommend grabbing a spot at the bar (inside or outside) as you can order from the full menu.
One of our favorite steakhouses in OC. Located on PCH just across the street from the Surf & Sand resort. Excellent wine and cocktails, amazing steak and don't miss the lobster mac 'n cheese. Best place to sit is out on the covered patio under the hanging lanterns.
Where there's always money in the banana stand. Walk and explore all the shops and food on Marine Ave. You can also walk the perimeter of the island along the harbor in less than an hour. Protip: if it's busy, you can park in the Bayside shopping center and walk across the bridge to the island.
