Before second-year law school classes start, law firms set up camp at a local hotel and hold interviews all day for a week. Harvard's career office has been known to compare the process to the Bachelor/Bachelorette, which I guess turned out to be true in more ways than one. Ken sat down at the table where Marie and her friend, Julie, were sitting. Ken kept showing up that week, and Julie kept trying to fix Ken and Marie up - setting up a group text message so they had each others' numbers and then pointing out all the cute things Ken kept doing that week. We ended up on the same flight back from some interviews in D.C. and the rest is history.
Harvard hosts a Barrister's Ball for graduating students every year. Marie had been teasing Ken for weeks that it was the perfect proposal opportunity, but he kept saying that things weren't going to be ready by then. After dinner the night of the dance, Ken suggested they walk around Harvard Yard and find a tree to carve their names into. Marie was somewhat suspicious given that it was still cold in Cambridge and her feet already hurt from the walk to the restaurant. As they reached the far corner of the yard, Ken pointed to the side of a tree. Marie looked over and there was a tree slice with "Will you marry me?" (which Ken made himself) burned into it. She said yes! Ken had arranged for a get together at a nearby campus waterhole where their friends were waiting to celebrate!
