Another Office Love Story

Love at Pirela Law

It all started at Pirela Law, where Carlos and I both began working for my brother (and Carlos’s longtime friend) Paul Pirela. Looking back, we were always just missing each other—living parallel lives until that fateful day at Pirela law. We had met previously, when Carlos and Paul were in college and Carlos gave Paul a ride home, and later again when I ran the games at the baby shower for Paul’s first baby, but it wasn’t until we both worked for Paul that we got to know and fall for each other. We tried to keep things professional… but somehow, we always ended up in the same room, laughing, pranking each other, and struggling with printers. Paul and everyone else in the office caught on long before we did. We were good friends, I had great admiration and respect for him but I always said I didn’t see him that way when people would try to point out the obvious. Carlos on the other hand, was so focused on wondering about how I felt to even notice what he was feeling. Until one day I cooked a thanksgiving meal for the office; he knew then that he loved me. I even think it was that moment when he decided he wanted to marry me. Before we knew it, coffee breaks turned into lunch breaks together and staying late to have more time to talk. I was still in denial, but Carlos had a plan and God and the whole office was on his side. Soon my car started breaking down and Carlos selflessly volunteered to drive me home every day—45-60 min out of his way home until I could figure out what was wrong with my car. (Today, there’s still speculation that maybe he tampered with it.) Sometimes we’d stop and get dinner and talk. At this point, I was still in denial about my feelings but I couldn’t deny knowing his, although he hadn’t told me yet. Then one day he invites himself to my church, and I see him linger after and help out with the clean up. I look over at him picking up chairs and my heart actually fluttered and I knew. I was in love with him. The next day he gives me a ride home, makes a detour at Chick-fil-A, confesses his feelings and the rest is history. We dated a year and six months when he woke me up 8 am on a Sunday for “brunch reservations” and proposed to me. I was so cranky and tired, I slept in the car on the way to the “restaurant” and when I woke up he handed me a blindfold. Minutes later, he’s walking me down a path but I’m sleepy, confused, disoriented, and blindfolded. Then, I hear our song start playing when he takes off the blindfold to reveal our families, the “will you marry me sign” and this gorgeous venue. I didn’t wait for him to finish getting out the ring when I said yes yes yes. Now I’m marrying my best friend before the end of this year, and I’m so happy to have you all there to celebrate with us.
