Mariah and Brett originally met through their advisor/boss Angie Krilich. Brett was working for Angie to assist student athletes in calculating the grade needed for their finals and Mariah was one of Angie's students. Angie assigned her to work with Brett both on those finals, and on weekly advising meetings in the semester after. Brett just couldn't keep his eyes off the pretty girl's ass and Mariah was obsessed with dem shoulders. Mariah had a "spot" she came to to watch dem shoulders twice a week for study hours and advising. All it took was truly awkward weekly drives after practice to student teaching experiences, one left behind water bottle, and "favorite ____" texts, and the rest is history. Mariah eventually left the rowing team for irreconcilable differences and the two have been together since.

Brett met my family at the 8th Annual Dale England Regatta at Lake Lemon my freshman year of undergrad. I had just lost my Varsity 4 the race due to a directionally challenged University of Iowa coxswain (it's okay Grace, I won't hold it against you) and was an absolute mess thinking that just cost me the season with the Varsity squad (which I did a real bang-up job of hiding from my boat). I came out to see my parents talking with my two favorite people, Angie and Brett. I remember my parents rarely looking at anyone but Brett and my dad asking after the drive back to Bloomington who the "short guy" was. I, of course, immediately had to text that to Brett and he got the biggest kick out of it. *Okay. Google has this as April 23rd, but Brett posted about it on the 22nd, so I have no idea now, but it's one of these two. I know this regatta was something like a 3-day event and some races were cancelled due to white caps and lightning (we had to pull Wisconsin out of swamped boats and take a launch out to save their boat from crashing ..... a detail I still lord over Brett's head). :)

Mariah met my mom, stepdad, and youngest sister for the first time on Thanksgiving. Mom, Mariah, and I decided on Mom's famous duck and salsa (though, I maintain I make a better duck) , and veggies (and some Stella Artois for Arnie). Mom, Ashley, and Mariah worked on the food and Ryan, Arnie, and I went over the football game that was on. Later that night we played Monopoly, rule-stickler edition (I was wrong on the rules, but won anyway ;D ), and Cards Against Humanity with some pee-your-pants laughter, literally.
