Things To Do

Below are some things to do in the area as compiled by Maria & Thomas and Thomas' parents. The order is roughly coffee, food, and then other attractions in the area. Also see details on the Friday night pre-wedding celebration. The parents of the groom are hosting! Everyone is welcome. 5 PM -- Meet us at Penny Lane Pub (421 E Franklin St), just a block or two from the Hilton. This is a cozy little place, perfect for the first toast of the weekend to the happy couple. From there, we’ll walk to the Capital Ale House (619 E Main St) for a casual evening of darts, billiards, tavern food, and drink. The Capital Ale House is letting us take over the downstairs bar area and outdoor covered patio. We’ll have full access to the regular menu and bar, including a large beer selection. Let us know if you plan to join us (bluecanoe7@gmail.com). Hope to see you there! https://www.pennylanepub.com/ https://capitalalehouse.com/

Sugar & Twine

2928 West Cary Street, Richmond, VA 23221

We have gone here most Saturdays during the last two years in Richmond. Delicious coffee drinks and great baking. Standing in the line for 15 minutes and people watching is part of the fun.

Sub Rosa Bakery

620 North 25th Street, Richmond, VA 23223

Local grains are house ground and baked in wood ovens to make bread & pastry in an airy, rustic space. This place has a reputation beyond Richmond.

Ironclad Coffee Roasters & Baking Co.

1805 East Grace Street, Richmond, VA 23223

Another favorite coffee shop of ours from when we lived on the east side of the city. They have delicious seasonal drinks.

Perly's

111 East Grace Street, Richmond, VA 23219

A Jewish restaurant downtown serving Jewish cuisine with a modern spin. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Expect a wait for breakfast – you’ll fight the local hipsters for a table.

Tarrant's Cafe Downtown

1 West Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23220

Upscale American meals in a cozy former pharmacy with tin ceilings, wooden booths, and chandeliers.

Greek on Cary

3107 West Cary Street, Richmond, VA 23221

Cool, compact eatery about 3 miles from downtown featuring gyros, souvlaki and other traditional Greek eats, plus beer and wine. It’s a nice neighborhood for walking and shopping.

Ardent Craft Ales

3200 West Leigh Street, Richmond, VA 23230

One of several breweries in Scotts addition, an old light industrial district that is filled with good breweries also including the Veil Brewing Co. (1509 Belleville St.) and Hardywood Park Craft Brewing (2410 Ownby St). Hardywood frequently features live music.

Beauvine Burger Concept

1501 West Main Street, Richmond, VA 23220

Maria's favorite burger place in Richmond. Delicious gluten free burgers and fries.

Maymont Park

Richmond, VA

Beautiful and large park featuring themed Italian and Japanese gardens and more importantly for Maria, a petting zoo area. Feeding and petting goats at Maymont was a regular past time of ours in Richmond.

James River Park

1200 Brander Street, Richmond, VA 23224

Richmond's huge public park system by the River.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden

1800 Lakeside Avenue, Henrico, VA 23228

Great botanical garden in the city.

Canal Walk Murals

1201 Haxall Point, Richmond, VA 23219

Big cool murals on the canal. Thomas' first apartment in the city is right next to them.

Hollywood Cemetery

412 South Cherry Street, Richmond, VA 23220

Giant historical cemetery in the Oregon hill neighborhood. Thomas proposed to Maria here (weirdo) ! A truly beautiful piece of nature in the middle of Richmond. Current home of Jeff Davis, J.E.B. Stuart, George Pickett, and several US presidents.

West Cary Street

West Cary Street, Richmond, VA

Cary street is Richmond's main shopping, dining, and entertainment street.

2004 Staples Mill Road, Richmond, VA 23230

Richmonds best antique mall. Featuring real stuffed dinosaurs and mid-century modern.
