How we metHow we met

The library and the piano

In a delightful twist straight out of a romantic comedy, our story began in the college library. As an outsider from Brazil, Maria was eager to find a sense of community and reached out to the Catholic group on campus. That very day, she found herself meeting Alan. Despite her nerves and shaky English, Alan's sweet patience put her at ease as they talked for far longer than they anticipated. He offered to drive her home, asked her out, and that was the beginning of their beautiful journey together. On the next day, Valentine's Day, little did Maria know that she'd be meeting Alan's parents on our very first date! "It was not on our plans at all! I was a nervous wreck, heart pounding and mind racing with thoughts of whether they'd like me or if I'd make a good impression." - Maria. "But all my fears melted away the moment I heard him playing the piano. The soothing notes flowed effortlessly from his fingers, calming me down. The melody was enchanting, drawing me into a serene world where everything felt perfectly in tune. In that moment, we discovered our first song together, a beautiful symphony of emotions where I felt completely lost in the music, every note in perfect harmony with my heart." Their official date took place the following Sunday at Mass. Sitting together in the peaceful ambiance of the church, they felt a deep sense of connection, not just with the faith community but with each other as well. Alan's quiet devotion and gentle presence made Maria feel at home in a foreign country. The following months were full of laughs, butterfly in the stomach and joyful moments. Over many dates, they delved into each other's worlds, sharing stories, dreams, and laughter. Each conversation brought them closer, and by the end of the evening, all they wanted to do was to stay longer in each other's presence.

Years ApartYears Apart

Shortly after we started dating, the pandemic hit, and I had to return to Brazil. This was the beginning of a long and challenging period of separation. In total, we spent two years apart, unable to see each other in person, hug, or go on dates. It was one of the hardest things we've ever had to endure. The distance and uncertainty tested our relationship in ways we couldn't have imagined, making us question if being together was truly part of God's plan for us. Despite the hardships, we remained committed to each other, our faith and love growing stronger with every passing day.

St Clare & St Francis

Their time apart was difficult but necessary for them to flourish. They decide to put God first and find out what was His plans for their lives. Because even if it wasn't God's will for them to be together, they wanted to see each other in Heaven no matter what because their love for each other goes beyond this world. And there is one of the reasons they feel especially close to Francis and Clare and their profound love for each other. Alan and Maria let themselves be shaped by God and everything started to fall into place. "I remember the indescribable peace and joy we felt once our prayers were answered and we knew for sure we were on the right path. God wanted us to glorify Him through the Sacrament of Marriage, and we couldn't be happier in fulfilling His will."
