Yes! The seaside city of Cartagena is generally considered safe for tourists. Crime against tourists is rare in Cartagena but you should exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings. Petty crimes like pickpocketing can occur, especially in crowded areas so keep your belongings secure and stay vigilant. As with any tourist destination, be cautious of scams targeting tourists. Street rappers, fruit vendors, and horse carriage drivers will expect remuneration for their services. It is always okay to say "no gracias" to politely decline, or you can simply walk away. We recommend staying within the Walled City or Bocagrande, as these tourist areas are well-policed.
The climate in Cartagena in January is sunny, with highs around 85°F and lows around 75°F, and little to no chance of rain. Don't forget to pack your bathing suit, as the hotels feature gorgeous pools and there are beautiful beaches! See 'Dress Code' below for more details.
Most of our events, aside from the rehearsal dinner, will take place within the "Walled City" or Old City of Cartagena. This part of the city is easily walkable, and our events will be just a short stroll from the recommended hotels. If you prefer not to walk, it's very easy to catch a cab. Uber is also available, and you can conveniently call an Uber from the airport. Transportation to the rehearsal dinner will depart from the recommended hotel.
The Colombian Peso (COP) is the official currency. Credit cards are widely accepted and used throughout the city. If you prefer to carry cash for taxis, tipping, etc., there are several ATMs available, and most hotels offer currency exchange services ($1 USD = ~4000 COP). As Cartagena is a popular tourist destination, you will find that many Colombians speak English.
