We met on the very first day, very first class of college and quickly bonded over daily bagel lunches together at Lakeside in Bemidji. Since we both majored in Graphic & Exhibit Design, we had every single class together (yes, every one), which meant we spent nearly all our time side by side—listening to lectures, working on late-night projects, and becoming the very best of friends. Jake knew he liked Mara right away. Mara, on the other hand, spent a whole year pretending she didn’t have a crush. After a year and a half of being "just friends" (and a lot of people saying, “Wait, you’re not dating?”), Mara finally admitted to herself—and to Jake—that she really, truly liked him. We officially started dating just a few weeks before COVID hit (great timing, right?), and spent our first year and a half as a couple in a bubble of takeout dinners, cozy couch days, lots of video games, and horror movie marathons. These days, our favorite things include date nights to Pizza Lucé or Yard House, lazy weekends bingeing our favorite shows, still playing a lot of video games, and playing side-by-side in an adult soccer league. Jake loves motor sports, and Mara loves hearing him talk about it. Mara loves Charlie Puth… and Jake loves Mara enough to listen to a lot of Charlie Puth. As two graphic designers, we share a passion for creativity—and we have a tendency to lovingly argue over fonts and color palettes like it’s a competitive sport. Five years later, Jake proposed on a freezing cold day at Lake Bemidji State Park—because nothing says romance like –60° windchill!
