In our first year at our middle school, we were in the same 7th-Grade Life Science class. We hardly knew anyone, yet we both came from places that cultivated our individuality and independence, so we made friends quickly. After about a week or two of casually greeting each other outside of class in giant swarms of smelly 12-year-olds, we were placed at the same table in the front of class. Our teacher, Ms. Beach, was an absolutely kind and generous soul so naturally we all gave her a hard time, and on this particular day we were watching a movie about some sort of natural phenomena. I remember that it was specifically between scenes of giant bugs and a bald narrator that a muscle in my right shoulder began to twitch in such a peculiar way that it warranted the attention of the person sitting next to me. If you can guess, this person was Manny, and I immediately took his hand from the table, placed it on my shoulder, and stared at him until his face gave me confirmation that he had felt my weird shoulder twitch. This was our spark.. as unromantic as it seemed I immediately knew that we had some sort of connection over that strange shoulder twitching, bald-narrating, big-bugging experience. Of course we were twelve, so even though I knew I would be seeing him again, it wasn't until 9th grade that we finally picked up where we left off in that 7th grade Life Science class, and we have been learning the world together ever since.
