Matt and Megan both knew that they wanted to marry each other after just a few months, and Matt asked Megan’s parents for their blessing the night Megan left to interview at UIUC in February 2015. But since they were both still in school and didn’t have much, the proposal would have to wait. The summer before Megan started graduate school, Matt told her that he planned to propose because they were going to spend some time apart, and he didn’t want her to worry about him going anywhere. In the fall of 2017, they met with a local jeweler to start work on the ring, and in December of that year, they were told the ring would be ready by mid-January. Megan kept that in mind and tried her best not to bug Matt about it, even though she really just wanted to wear that ring already, especially since they had a few weddings coming up, starting with Mark & Shani's on May 5, 2018. Little did Megan know, Mark and Shani were about as impatient as she was, and Shani had an idea. At the tux fitting, she suggested that Matt propose at their reception, and they hatched a plan. Every step of the way, Mark and Shani were convinced that Megan would figure it out (however, in spite of her education and knowledge, Megan could be a bit dense, so they were safe), especially since they invited Megan’s parents to the reception. Megan just thought they had some people cancel at the last minute and wanted to fill a table! The wedding day arrived, and the ceremony was perfectly Mark & Shani. Not long after the newlyweds arrived at the reception venue, Megan sent Matt to the bar to get her a drink (unintentionally helping with their big plan), and then they announced that Shani was going to throw the bouquet and ushered all unmarried women to the open space near the bar. Shani prepared to throw the bouquet, but then ran over to Megan to hand it to her, and when she ran off, Matt was on his knee holding the ring they had designed together.
