How We Met

First Comes Deployment, Then Comes Love

In January 2022, two people from opposite sides of the country unknowingly began the same chapter of a story that was written long before they met. Sven, stationed in North Carolina, and Malysia, from Oklahoma, each set out on separate military deployments that would take them thousands of miles from home—to the desert sands of Kuwait. Neither knew that in the middle of a foreign land, they were about to find something extraordinary: each other. For Malysia, deployment felt like a whirlwind. Just days after arriving in Kuwait, she was reassigned to Jordan with her unit. The days were long but full of new adventures, and she quickly found joy in the little things—sunsets that painted the sky gold, shared laughter with new friends, and the feeling of strength that comes from adapting to the unknown. But just as she began to settle in, she received unexpected orders—she’d be returning to Kuwait. Though it was hard to say goodbye to her team in Jordan, she had no idea that this change would lead her to the person who would one day become her husband. Meanwhile, Sven was adjusting to his own rhythm in Kuwait. Between the heat, the routine, and the chaos of deployment, the gym became his sanctuary. And one ordinary day in that gym, fate decided it was time. He noticed her first—her energy, her smile, her light-hearted laugh. A simple “hey” turned into a conversation that neither of them wanted to end. What started as small talk quickly grew into something magnetic—something that felt like home in a place that was anything but. Their first date wasn’t fancy, but it was perfect—a moonlit picnic under the starlit Kuwaiti sky, sharing chicken shawarma and laughing until their cheeks hurt. It was in that moment that time seemed to slow down, and they both realized this connection was something rare. As the weeks passed, their bond deepened. They made memories between long shifts, late-night talks, and fleeting moments of peace. When their time in Kuwait came to an end, they promised to wait for one another—to hold on to the connection they had found and see where it would lead. That promise carried them through the distance and the months apart. When they were finally reunited back in the States, it was clear—their hearts had already chosen each other. With the blessing of both families, who were miles away, they chose to elope in an intimate courthouse ceremony—just the two of them, hand in hand, promising forever, joined by their witnesses who shared in the joy of that special day. It was simple, beautiful, and exactly right for them. Now, with no more deployments ahead and a future that finally feels steady, Sven and Malysia are ready to celebrate their love with everyone who has been part of their journey. With hearts full of gratitude and joy, they’re excited to share their next chapter—their wedding celebration in July 2026.
