Mal and I met in probably the nerdiest way possible: on Tumblr over our mutual love for the TV show Torchwood. It was only about a month after I lost Joseph, and I had done the one thing I knew helped me escape everything: lose myself in Torchwood. We met and our friendship was immediate and strong. I was at the lowest point in my life and still struggling every single day to make it through, and there was Mal who was willing to take on the grief of a stranger and be there through some pretty rough moments. Our friendship is one of the things that really got me through this period of time, I don't know what I would have done without Mal there. Trips were planned back and forth between England and Texas, we didn't go a day without speaking in one way or another--whether over text, by phone, or through a video chat; our communication was constant. Mal will say that she knew immediately that she had a crush on me, but also knew I was in no way ready for anything. Eventually, life -- love-- found a way. Time passed and healed, and when it was ready, my heart knew exactly who it wanted: her. And when our relationship started, it was immediately obvious that it was forever. However, I put one rule in place: we had to date a year before getting engaged. So, a year passed and almost immediately, I was surprised with the sweetest and most surprising proposal. Just as our story began, it progressed in the nerdiest way possible: through a D&D one shot where I unknowingly held the ring Mal would end the game by using to propose for six hours.
