How We Met! (from Malia's perspective)

August 2011, ROTC Orientation week, University of Idaho/WSU campus

So... maybe some of you remember back in the day when I thought I wanted to be a Marine?? I met Natty Lambert during that wild time, and instead of experiencing butterflies or a "honeymoon phase," we got to wake up at 5am and do push ups everyday! We also had to prioritize our relationships with our rifles. Natty must have started noticing me first though, because he kept picking on me like a 2nd grade boy picks on his classmate crush. I'm sure it was the khaki uniform that really did it for him. Or maybe it was when I couldn't keep up on a hike and he watched Roy physically push me up the hill that he fell in love. After about a year I'd had enough of pretend war (for the record, I lasted longer than Ryan). Before moving back home, I happened to attend a house party hosted at Natty's. When I walked in the door, he was holding his tiny, precious new kitten in his arms. It was like my eyes opened and I saw the epitome of masculinity. Well, time went on, and Natty received a scholarship for the last two years of the program. This was no small feat. I heard news of it, and I decided to reach out to congratulate him. We ended up talking late into the night, started long-distance shortly after, and the rest is history :) Also shout-out to my girl Ali Brooks. Without your constant vouching, I may never have given him a chance ;)

How We Met (Natty's perspective)

I once had to hold a plank while wearing a 50lb pack because a certain Midshipman Caldwell decided to throw her rifle in the dirt in disgust during a hike. This was obviously the moment I fell head over heels in love with her. Needless to say, upon learning of this incident, the Commandant of the Marine Corps directly intervened and took Malia's ROTC scholarship and transferred it to me. That may be a slight exaggeration but it's the story I'll tell our grandkids. Once my still-developing brain realized there was more to Malia than her attitude and lack of lower body strength, we decided to give our courtship a shot. Our first date was at Red Bento - a five-star restaurant by Pullman standards, and a half-star by anywhere else in the world. Malia was somehow interested, and more surprisingly, tolerant of 19-year-old Natty. From there we began the roller-coaster that was our long-distance relationship through college, flight attendant life and active duty; which took us from Washington to Alaska to Virginia to California (with plenty of stops in Montana in between). I wouldn't have it any other way. Malia and I truly grew up together, improving our relationship and ourselves with patience and love - and becoming besties in the process. I love her to death and I know that the best is still yet to come.

For all the days along the way
