Savannah and Chad met in May of 2015 in Louisville. Savannah had just moved in with her sister in a small, two-bedroom apartment, following a year internship in New Orleans after undergrad at the University of Alabama (Roll Tide, Y'all). Chad was home for the summer after his second year in law school at Wake Forest, staying in one of his sister's old rooms in his parents' house. On their first date, Savannah, not knowing exactly where things were in Louisville, asked Chad if he wanted to go to Ramsis' Cafe for dinner. She asked him if he would be willing to pick her up and drive her there. Chad, not wanting to be rude, picked her up and drove her there, ignoring the fact that they ended up parking further from the restaurant than where her sister's apartment was. Any hesitation, though, quickly faded away as they talked for hours, bonding over music, theatre, and memories of growing up with their crazy families. They dated the remainder of the summer, watching Shakespeare in the park, strolling across the Walking Bridge, and dancing at Play, Nowhere, and wherever it was Jaclyn and Ben took us Contra dancing, and when it was time for Chad to go back to North Carolina for his last year of law school, Savannah was devastated. Long distance relationships were never something that either of them wanted. They swore distance would never work. No way would any of this last, unless, of course, if you want to maybe try, well, I guess, maybe, if you wanted to... Cut to two years later—Chad graduated from law school and passed the Bar, while Savannah became the Recreation Manager at Cedar Lake Lodge. They stuck together through job changes, moving (twice), and the uncertainty of what the future held. Savannah works at Cedar Lake with adults with intellectual and development disabilities, as the Lodge's recreation manager. Chad is currently a prosecutor for Jefferson County.
In December 2017, Chad's immediate family and his paternal grandparents took a trip to Cancun, Mexico, to celebrate his parents' 30th, and his grandparents' 60th wedding anniversaries. It was a magical week that included floating down a river filled with tropical fish, delicious food, and walking on the beach under the stars. One late afternoon, Chad told Savannah that they had to get dressed up to take some family pictures on the open-air terrace that overlooked the ocean. Savannah was so excited to be included. The whole family got together, with a few glasses of champagne for some reason. Chad kept telling the other couples to take their photos first. His sisters, parents, grandparents, and finally Chad and Savannah. Instead of the picture, Chad told Savannah how much he loved her, how he would always love her, and went down on one knee. As Savannah remembers it, she jumped up and down and said yes at least twenty times (while telling herself not to put the ring on herself) before she jumped in his arms and kissed him. From there, they had a romantic dinner on the beach, and started planning for the day that they would both say "I do!"
