This museum has long been one of D.C.'s most popular and has recently undergone a massive renovation. Timed (free) tickets are required, and we recommend you book them in advance.
This museum will take your breath away, but make sure to allot a few hours for your visit. Like many of the Smithsonian's museums along the National Mall, this museum is massive!

Eastern Market is DC's oldest market, located in the historic Capitol Hill neighborhood. There's a great street market on weekends, but everything is closed on Mondays.
Rock Creek is also the only national park with an on-site planetarium. National Park Service Rangers conduct free programs twice a day on Saturdays and Sundays.
Walk through George (and Martha!) Washington's home and gardens just 15 miles from DC. Tickets are required. Mt. Vernon is not metro acceptable.
