"No chance I'm meeting someone this summer", Makayla stated to a couple friends before her first summer as a counselor at Pine Lake Camps. Sam shared similar thoughts prior to arriving for that first week of training; they had never been so wrong. God always has a way of bringing people to the places they need to be, and to the individuals he wants them to meet. Beginning with a few compliments, an Office inspired conversation, and a whole lot of intentionality- it was clear Makayla and Sam had mutual feelings for one another. So after a summer full of pickup basketball games, stargazing, growing in the Lord, and sharing God's love; Sam and Makayla began their relationship together.

After 2 years, 3 months, and 24 days of dating Sam proposed to Makayla at the place where it all began. He carefully worked out the perfect plan of surprise. That weekend Sam and Makayla were heading back to Pine Lake Camps for Staff Thanksgiving; however, Sam told Makayla they needed to get there early so he could help a friend with set up. Makayla didn't think anything suspicious because Sam is always quick to help others! Then upon arrival, Sam insisted on taking a walk around camp to reminisce. Makayla was eager to work on the homework she brought along, but she agreed a walk would be nice. This walk was rather different than other walks the two had taken, there was intentionality with each step. Sam took a moment to pause at each location, and recall his and Makayla's special memories. From the basketball court, where they bonded over a love of sportsl; the chapel, which wasn't planned but Makayla was thirsty; the bridge, where they would go on early morning runs (something Sam did just to impress and spend more time with Makayla); to the dining hall, where Sam first took notice of Makayla and they had their first conversation. As they wandered into the gazebo, Sam planned their final stop not to recall a memory, but rather to make one. After gazing out over the geese floating along the lake, Sam explained to Makayla his love for her and his intentions to pursue her for the rest of his life. He took Makayla's hand, knelt down, and asked to share her hand in marriage. Makayla, through tears of joy, said yes.
