Question

Is it safe?

Answer

Yes! Quito is a vibrant, historic city, and like any major city, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings. The areas where most visitors spend their time, like the historic center, La Mariscal, and La Floresta, are generally safe, especially during the day. We recommend the same precautions you’d take when traveling to any large city: avoid flashing valuables, be mindful of your belongings, and use registered taxis or rideshare apps like Uber for convenience and peace of mind. We want you to feel comfortable, and we’re confident that with these basic safety measures, you’ll have an incredible time exploring Quito!

Question

Is the water safe to drink?

Answer

In Quito, it's generally recommended to stick to bottled or filtered water. Bottled water is easily available at all hotels, restaurants, and stores, so you’ll have no problem staying hydrated. To be extra cautious, we suggest using bottled water for drinking, brushing your teeth, and even for ice. This way, you can fully enjoy your time without any worries!

Question

How long does it take to adjust to the altitude?

Answer

Quito is about 10,000 ft above sea level (twice as high as Denver!). Everyone adjusts differently, but it usually takes up to 3 days to adjust to the altitude. To help with the adjustment, we recommend: - Stay hydrated as dehydration can make altitude sickness worse. - Eat a candy or gum as sugar will help with altitude sickness. - Altitude can enhance the effects of alcohol, so you will want to drink responsibly when adjusting to the altitude. - Avoid intense physical activity until you are acclimated Some guests find that drinking coca tea, a local herbal remedy, or carrying altitude sickness tablets can help too. By the second day, you’ll likely feel much more adjusted and ready to explore!

Question

Do people speak English? How do I communicate?

Answer

While English is spoken at most tourist spots, hotels, and by some younger locals, Spanish is the primary language in Quito. In more touristy areas, you’ll likely find people who can communicate in English, especially in restaurants, hotels, and shops. However, when exploring more local neighborhoods, knowing some basic Spanish phrases will be helpful and appreciated! We recommend downloading a translation app like Google Translate to assist you in those moments when language barriers arise. People in Quito are very friendly and will often do their best to help, even if there's a language gap. A smile and a little patience go a long way!

Question

How long does it take to get there?

Answer

Flight times to Quito vary depending on where you're flying from in the U.S. On average, here’s what you can expect: - From Miami: Direct flights take about 4 to 4.5 hours. - From New York (JFK): Direct flights are around 6 to 6.5 hours. - From Houston: Direct flights take approximately 5 to 5.5 hours. Since Quito's airport is modern and efficient, once you land, getting through customs and into the city is typically quick, leaving you more time to enjoy your trip!

Question

What will the weather be like?

Answer

Quito’s weather can be unpredictable, but generally, it's mild with temperatures ranging from 50°F to 70°F. It’s a good idea to bring layers since mornings and evenings can be cool, while afternoons are usually warm. Also, keep in mind that quick rain showers can happen, so having a light jacket or umbrella is handy!

Question

What should we wear?

Answer

For the wedding, we recommend formal attire. Keep in mind that Quito's altitude can make evenings cooler, so bringing a light shawl or jacket for the reception might be a good idea. For exploring the city, comfortable shoes and layers are perfect for sightseeing. Quito's sun is very intense, don't forget to pack your sunscreen!
