Maiya and Jeremy met on a Saturday evening when Maiya and her roommates decided to invite every friend group they had to play a game called Hostages. Friends from the Tahiti Mission came, friends from the singles ward showed up, and even some people Maiya had never met before joined in. It turned into the perfect opportunity to make new friends. Jeremy happened to see the invite on the ward group chat and was more than willing to show up and meet new people. Everyone met up at the BYU stadium parking lot, where the rules were explained and teams were split up. The rules of Hostages: each team had a driver, a navigator, and a couple of players from the other team—these were your “hostages,” who were blindfolded in the back seat. Teams would drive their hostages somewhere unfamiliar and drop them off. After a 15-minute timer, teams then had to go find and pick up their own blindfolded teammates who had been dropped off by the opposing team. The first team to successfully retrieve their own players and return to home base won the round. Once the timers were set, the teams were off. For the first round, Maiya was navigating while her friend Kelsey drove (don’t worry—they drove very safely). Amy and Jeremy were blindfolded in the back seat. At one point, Jeremy asked, “So… what’s everybody’s names?” Everyone introduced themselves—except Maiya, who figured he wouldn’t remember it anyway with a blindfold on. They dropped off their hostages, went to retrieve their own teammates, and rushed back to the starting parking lot. Maiya’s team won the first round! In the second round, Maiya ended up on Jeremy’s team while he drove their hostages up the mountain. They managed to win that round as well. Afterwards, everyone went back to Jeremy’s place to watch Knives Out—because it was October, of course. Throughout the movie, Maiya and Jeremy kept making eye contact, and a few weeks later they went on their first date… swing dancing. The rest is history 🤍
