Maily Vang and Pheng Yang met at a leadership conference in Sacramento, CA, when they were both college juniors—Pheng attended Chico State University and Maily attended Fresno State University. During their lunch break outside of the restroom hall Pheng and Maily introduced themselves—their hometown, college attended, and their major.
Maily and Pheng have had crossed paths multiple times in the last half-decade in a professional setting. But, when they met unexpectedly at Sudden Rush Hmong Concert in town it was their first time socializing as friends. They talked about life and laughed about many things.
Ever since the concert Pheng & Maily had been switching texts. One summer day, Maily pulled a gruesome 10-hour study for her board exam; she desperately needed a break. That day she had asked Pheng for a casual meet-up & drinks at a local brewery. Lost in time of where the night went - for more than 10 hours of sitting down - somehow Maily and Pheng grew fond of each other and appreciated the life events one another went through. When they realized the brewery was closing they were forced to end the evening. They went home thinking... Is this the beginning of something amazing?
A few months into 2021, Pheng was already trying to plan the proposal, but with Maily’s work schedule it was hard to find a date. When Pheng mentioned he had airflight credits to be used Maily asked if they could go to Cancun. Pheng was ecstatic as this could be the real proposal! They then booked their hotel & flights. On their first night in Cancun as they were walking on the beach with a glass of wine on their hands they sat on the beach chairs with the bright stars shining in the sky and the waves crashing—it was such a peaceful evening. Pheng turned to Maily and held her hands tightly while begining his proposal speech. Just minutes into it Maily finally realized what he was doing, and she started feeling fuzzy, warm and emotional. He finally asked the question ‘Will you marry me?’ Maily noded her head Yes and tears started falling.
