Jason and Maia first met at a Spikeball tournament in July 2021—or, if you ask Jason (who doesn’t recall this), at a tournament in May 2022. The May 2022 tournament featured a heated finals matchup, in which Maia won. This initial rivalry and competition soon gave way to friendship as they continued crossing paths at various tournaments. Over time, their casual conversations evolved into a friendship, during which Jason traded his sore-loser feelings for romantic ones. Unbeknownst to Jason, Maia initially had no reciprocated feelings, as she only thought of him as “the old bald guy who hosts the tournaments in Seattle.” Twice, Jason misinterpreted their friendly banter and even endured rejection. However, the third time proved to be the charm when Maia finally asked him to play a coed tournament with her. In the lead-up to the tournament, their team chemistry began to build. Their conversations shifted from Spikeball team names to graduating from PT school and books they were reading—including "The Meaning of Marriage" by Tim Keller. Even though Maia still didn’t have feelings for him, Jason’s heartfelt and handpicked quotes sparked a connection. Their subtle, flirtatious conversations led to their first non-Spikeball-related “hangout,” where Jason offered Maia a tennis lesson. She insisted on buying him lunch as payment. What started as a simple morning of tennis and lunch blossomed into a 12-hour marathon of a first date. Maia inched her way toward Wimbledon, and she introduced Jason to Ethiopian food as promised. The day continued as they explored Seattle on a Lime scooter, visiting Sculpture Park and Pike Place, and ended with a rare Mariners victory. At the end of the night, Jason asked, “Hey, I just wanted to be absolutely sure… this was a date, right?” Maia confirmed, Jason celebrated with a crisp high-five, and the rest is history. They are so excited to share this special day with you all! Let the countdown begin!
