YES. You likely won't need it to get into Mexico, but you definitely will need it to get back.
Most wireless plans cover call, text, and data in Mexico and Canada. We have AT&T and it's great. If you're not sure, call your provider to double check.
We're working on this. I set up these carpool signups that no one used, so I think instead we're going to organize a couple shuttles from San Diego to the Valle. If this interests you please let us know ASAP!
Driving across the border into Mexico is very, very easy. Most cars are just waved through, no showing documentation or anything like that. Driving back into the US from Mexico takes more time. There are THREE points of entry that make sense to use: San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, and Tecate. This website (https://bwt.cbp.gov/) will show you the current and expected wait times to cross back into the US. First select "Passenger Vehicles," then choose your border crossing. From west to east: 1. San Ysidro takes you from Tijuana into San Diego. It's the most congested. It is open 24 hours. 2. Otay Mesa is still Tijuana/San Diego, but farther east. It's also open 24 hours. 3. Tecate is the farthest east and usually the least congested. Its hours are 6AM-10PM. THIS IS OUR FAVORITE FOR ENTERING AND EXITING. You avoid driving in Tijuana and it’s the shortest wait time. https://bwt.cbp.gov/
The little town of Villa de Juarez is just one hour south of the San Diego border. It's in the Guadalupe Valley, which is famous for its wine. It's about 30 minutes Northeast of Ensenada. Use Google Maps to get to the venue. It works! Here is a link! https://goo.gl/maps/grUuA2WF2Ct5PreY8
If you're driving your own car, yes, it's a good idea if heaven forbid anything happens. Call your insurance to add it to your policy. Or AAA. It should be about $50.
For guests who are flying, we recommend flying into San Diego or Tijuana and then renting a car or hopping into a carpool/shuttle. If renting in San Diego, you'll just need to let them know you'll be crossing the border so they include Mexican insurance. If renting in Tijuana, we recommend Alamo Rent A Car.
Generally, yes, very safe. This random blogger has answered all your questions already: https://castawaywithcrystal.com/mexico-road-trip/
We have four hotel blocks to choose from. Scoot on over to the Lodging page for links.
Yeah. We're asking everyone to share their vaccination status with us when they RSVP. Depending on the state of things, we may ask for negative tests before the weekend too.
