It was 2015 when they first met at a backyard BBQ in Prunedale, CA, while Ulises was on holiday to the United States. He thought she was cute, she loved his smile. Their friendship began with a few jovial laughs, delicious eats, and broken Spanglish. Fast forward to 2017, Ulises had returned for another holiday visit - cuter than Maggie had remembered. But, alas, the timing was not yet right. Then, on June 15, 2019, Maggie (totally averse to the online dating scene) had it set in her mind that she was going "husband hunting" that weekend in Monterey with a couple girlfriends. When plans changed last minute and a the proposition of a pool party popped up, Maggie decided to ditch the hunting mission and head to Prunedale for the day. Without any makeup, and with only a sundress, swimsuit, and her dog in tow, she had no idea that her hunting mission was about to be fulfilled. Ulises had arrived to California only two days before, and today was his birthday! He spent the day touring around with his friend. When he pulled up to the BBQ that evening, his eyes locked with Maggie's. Her heart leapt from her chest. She saw "him" for the first time, her heart recognizing her destiny before her mind could truly comprehend. For several hours of the party, Maggie and Ulises orbited the party (sans pool), opposite of each other, exchanging bashful glances and warm smiles. Their friends knew that something was up! When it was time for dinner, their friends schemed to place Maggie and Ulises next to each other at the table. The conversation flowed. Later that evening, anxious to actually get to the "pool party" part of the day, Maggie asked "Who's coming in the hot tub with me?" Her friends replied in unison, "Ulises will go in the hot tub with you!" By some miracle, all of the years of Spanish language study came rushing back to Maggie and they talked, and walked, and swam, and - finally - kissed. Before they new it, it was nearly morning, and they were in love.
