We met in the summer of 2019 when mutual friends invited us to a worship gathering. Andrew: We met at the Anaheim Packing District for dinner. I had already sat down with my friends and food when a new face walked over to our table. Maggie: This cute guy offered me his chair, but I was too shy to take it from him, though I eventually caved. A: After the gathering, the group went to get boba. It was a summer night, so we were able to chat more and get to know each other. M: I was impressed that Andrew liked boba, so I knew this was someone I was interested in. When it was time to go home, Andrew said “Hope to see you again soon, Maggie.” I was floored he remembered my name. I thought I would never see him again though, given I had never met him at other hangouts. A: Fast forward a month, and my church is playing a worship night for students at a local church. I was scheduled to play piano, and the worship leader invited Maggie (who attended a different church) to sing in the band. M: When I saw Andrew’s name for keys, I thought this was maybe the same Andrew I met a month ago. It might’ve been too good to be true. I pulled up to the first day of rehearsal and there he was, keyboard in hand. A: I was ecstatic to see the cute girl pop back into my life. I had a hard time focusing on the piano because I kept stealing glances. Later that week we attended a band dinner at a friend's house. I don’t remember what we ate, just that Maggie and I ended up talking till 2am by the fire pit. M: The next day, I texted him asking the name of a worship song the group sang by the fire. I already knew what the song was, but I needed an excuse to get the conversation going. A: I spent hours sifting through spotify playlists to try and find this song! My efforts paid off though, as the conversation evolved to our personal lives. Very quickly I found out that this was something special. M: During our lunch break at the worship night, I was desperately trying to find Chick-Fil-A sauce for my nuggets, but had no luck. Until all of a sudden, a very generous Andrew came and offered me the packet I had been looking for. It was love at first sauce. A: After a few weeks of texting and interacting in group settings, I finally found the courage to ask Maggie out. At first, we scheduled a casual lunch. But somehow, it turned into dinner, and then “I’ll pick you up at six”. M: Our first date was full of laughter, and the conversation flowed so seamlessly like I had already known him for years. We kept the night going by heading to UCI for the obligatory post-dinner boba. We strolled around UCI and ended up watching the Shakespeare show from afar while sipping our boba and talking into the night. A: Luckily things went well enough to warrant a second date. She was leaving in a few days for a family trip to Taiwan, so I knew I had to make a move fast. I packed a picnic basket and picked her up for stargazing. M: We looked at constellations that night and indulged in sweet treats (AKA the way to my heart) and I felt my heart becoming closer to his. A: As the night grew colder, I felt my opportunity slipping away. I knew I couldn’t let her leave for two weeks without telling her how I felt. So I asked for her middle name, took a deep breath, and asked her to be my girlfriend. Six years later, we’re more in love than ever and cannot wait to get married and continue this lifelong journey together!
