How We Met

A moment meant to be

Nick and Gabby met at Virginia Tech playing indoor volleyball (aka wallyball) through mutual friends Mike and Liz. That night, Nick somehow managed to introduce himself to Gabby more than ten times - by the fifth introduction, she was convinced he had to be joking. A few weeks later, they ran into each other two more times. This time, the introductions finally stuck, the conversations lasted longer, and something clicked. They exchanged numbers, Nick asked Gabby on a date (after she told him they should hang out sometime), and from that moment on, the rest was history.

Over the Years

Officially in it for the long haul!

The first four years of Nick and Gabby’s relationship were filled with FaceTimes, endless texts, and the occasional plane ride as Nick attended flight school and Gabby finished grad school and began her career in DC. Eventually, Nick and his family moved to Richmond, shifting their relationship into what they fondly called “short long-distance” - no flights required, just a much easier 1.5-hour drive. In 2024, Nick became a pilot out of Dulles, allowing them to finally move in together. Less than a year later, they were engaged. None of this would have been possible without the constant love and support of their friends and family, and they are so grateful to everyone who helped them get to this moment.

How he proposed

When in Rome (or Bruges)

Nick and Gabby took their first trip to Europe together, starting in Amsterdam before hopping on trains to Bruges, Ghent, and Brussels. Nick gave Gabby absolutely no indication that a proposal was coming and to keep the ring hidden, Nick nervously avoided going through TSA with Gabby telling her that he would meet her after security. Thankfully, the plan worked, and the ring stayed safely hidden the entire trip. On their first night in Bruges, they wandered along the canals and discovered a quiet, charming street that Nick secretly bookmarked for later - since he hadn’t brought the ring that night. The next evening, after what they thought would be a simple dinner turned into a surprise five-course meal (with a very European 45-minute wait for the check), Nick grew increasingly eager to go for another walk before sunset. Gabby found his urgency hilarious, especially since they’d already explored the area the night before. After a few wrong turns, they finally reached a bridge with the cathedral glowing in the background. There, Nick proposed, and Gabby excitedly said yes. On their walk back to the hotel, they passed a street named “Ring Street,” and it felt like the perfect ending to a day that was always meant to be.
