It's been a very difficult decision, but we have decided to cancel our rescheduled wedding reception on April 10th. We're very happy with the small wedding we had last May, and we don't want to risk the health of our friends and family by asking them to gather before the pandemic is more under control. We were really looking forward to seeing our loved ones and spending time together, but we're not comfortable with the timing. We hope you're all staying safe and healthy!
Maegan and Kyle met at the University of Alabama, where they were both members of the Million Dollar Band (piccolo for Maegan, trumpet for Kyle). They were in marching band together for three years before they met for the first time, even though Maegan marched next to Kyle's roommate for the entire 2014 football season. In March of 2015, Maegan and Kyle were both on a pep band trip to Arkansas for an SEC basketball tournament. They sat near each other on the bus but said nothing, even though he kept looking at her (she was looking at him, too. She found out later he thought he was being subtle). The trip was meant to be short, but the pep band was snowed in for an extra day. Maegan was the only piccolo player on the trip, so she fell in with the trumpet players, since she knew most of them already, except for Kyle. They were in each other’s orbit for a few days, and Kyle even saw a movie he wasn't interested in because he knew Maegan wanted to see it when the pep band went to a theater. They went to a movie, two restaurants, and walked to Walmart in the snow with the pep band and still didn’t really talk to each other. By the time the band was headed home, Kyle decided that he would start speaking to Maegan and they got to know each other a little. Actual excerpt from Maegan’s journal on this guy named Kyle from pep band: “On the bus back on Friday, I talked to him a little and realized that he’s pretty awkward, but he is really cute.” At the end of the trip, Kyle asked Maegan if she was participating in another pep band event the next day. She hadn’t planned on it but decided then that she would be going. They sat next to each other on the bus that next day, and when it seemed like Kyle would never ask for Maegan’s number, she took his phone out of his hand and put her number in anyway. He says that he had planned to ask, but the bus was still too far from the school. She says she figured if he hadn’t asked for it by then, he never would.
Maegan and Kyle had talked about getting married and knew that it would happen eventually. In August of 2018, they went ring shopping for the first time and picked out the perfect engagement ring. That same day, they adopted their cat Bonnie, and they had never felt so much like adults in their lives. For Christmas that year, they were still living in Austin, Texas, but went to Alabama for the holiday to see Maegan’s family. They had planned a trip to Tuscaloosa with two friends, Brandon and Millia, for the day after Christmas. In Tuscaloosa, they walked around campus, had some excellent ribs for lunch (shout out to the original Archibald’s in Northport), and decided to go to the Tuscaloosa Riverwalk. There was a tugboat floating by, which Maegan took some pictures of. Little did she know that Kyle was waiting for the boat to pass by so that it wouldn’t be in the background of their pictures. Brandon had a nice camera and suggested that Maegan and Kyle take a picture together. Maegan was very aware of how unphotogenic she and Kyle were, so she suggested that she take a picture of Brandon and Millia instead, but Millia said that she wanted to take a picture with Maegan and Kyle. She had been transporting the ring and during the picture, she handed it off to Kyle. Right after the picture was snapped, she stepped away, Maegan turned to look at Kyle, and he was on one knee.
