As fate would have it, they were both at a keg party near the Sandy River in Farmington Maine. It was a beautiful New England Spring, evening however, they did not actually cross paths at this keg party. Later in class they would bond over being at the same party. Their shared class also had a debate where Matt and Emily were the only two in the entire class who shared a similar opinion. Thus, the two of them were paired to debate the issue against the rest of their First Year Seminar classmates (about 10 people). Near the end of the semester Matt finally worked up the courage to ask Emily out. He told Emily that a bunch of classmates were all going to the movies and if she wanted to come. Emily came and when she arrived Matt was the only one there. The tactic worked and the rest is history. Fun fact: the movie was The Haunting in Connecticut.
Emily grew up going to her family’s camp on Frye island located in Sebago Lake. Her uncle had a place there with a long dock going far out into the water. Emily’s best childhood memories are playing on that dock and often joked with her Uncle and family that she would get married out on the dock someday. Matt planned a trip there one summer and kept the ring hidden in his swim trunks the whole time. At the end of the dock Matt popped the question. Emily had no idea it was coming as Matt is good at keeping secrets. Emily said yes and here we are!
