Madisen and Jarod first met through a small group at the Wesley Foundation at Oklahoma State University. Madisen's first memory of Jarod is him throwing pillows in front of the doors to the Wesley to activate the motion-sensitive locks to let someone in for late-night small group. Jarod's first memory of Madisen is her pulling feathers out from the pillows during small group and giving them to him as gifts.

On Tuesday, September 28, 2021, Madisen unsuspectingly gave Jarod a ride back to his car from the Wesley after small group. Jarod then surprised her with a plant (he clearly already figured out her love language) that had a tag with the question "Will you go on a date with me: Yes or Yes, but only for the plant". Naturally, Madisen chose "Yes, but only for the plant". They had their first date at the Botanic Gardens in Stillwater on October 1, 2021. After a picnic at the Gardens, they weren't ready for the date to end, so they went to IHOP for dessert, where they ate dessert pancakes and watched a movie. Three years later to the day, Jarod asked Madisen to marry him on the shore of Lake Hefner (while she was in the middle of lamenting the fact that David Attenborough is old and will probably die soon; classic), where she said yes, without even needing a plant to persuade her.
