Madeline and Erik had many mutual friends during their time at UNCW, but never crossed paths until one night in March 2019, in downtown Wilmington. Erik was with family celebrating his brother Dylan's 21st birthday and Madeline was meeting up with some friends. They later went on a date in May, and spent the summer falling in love.

Erik and Madeline spent the day surfing and gathering Christmas gifts for family. Erik asked Madeline if she wanted to have pho for dinner, make hot chocolate, then drive to look at Christmas lights. On the way out of the house, Erik said they had to go by a friend's house to pick something up. When they arrived, he said they had to go inside. Once inside, she saw the room lit with candles, a vase of flowers, and a bottle of champagne. Madeline turned around to find Erik on one knee with the ring he had since July. They shared the news with family and a few close friends, ate pho, and finally drove to look at Christmas lights.
