Two years ago, we were sitting in a tiki bar on a chilly April evening in Bergen, Norway. We had just ordered our second round of drinks and were patiently waiting for them to arrive. We noticed a boisterous group of men at the other end of the bar putting on their jackets and getting ready to depart. As one of the Norwegian men stumbled his way towards the bar exit, he stopped at our table and looked at both of us with a large smile. He gently grabbed our clasped hands with his own and rambled on for quite some time in Norwegian. His words were unintelligible, partly due to us not knowing any Norwegian, and partly from the many cocktails he presumably consumed. We politely let him know that we did not speak Norwegian. He must have had quite some difficulty putting together his statement in English so his friend came over to our table and helped translate what the man had just said. He said, “my friend was trying to say he noticed the two of you tonight and had to tell you how much you two look like you are in love.” Almost exactly two years after that moment, we are traveling back to Norway to marry one another and celebrate the love that the group of Norwegians saw in us.
James proposed to Madeleine at Blair Castle in Scotland last May. James chose to ask Madeleine to marry him here as his ancestors resided at Blair Castle in the 1800s and he knew her love of castles and gardens would make for a magical experience.
