Fall of our freshman year, we met waiting for the buses for the new student retreat in the Badlands. While we were individually waiting for what seemed like forever, Tanner walked up to Madeleine and introduced himself. We sparked up a conversation about our Confirmation Saints (St. Joseph and St. Thérèse). Madeleine had to stand up because Tanner was "Too tall to talk to when sitting down." Very shortly after this, the buses arrived. We waited in line together and got on the same bus together with our friends. Madeleine sat in the row right in front of Tanner. On the bus ride, conversations just flowed, and we just got to know each other very well. We even compared hand sizes (because Madeleine is a musician and that's what musicians do). That evening, there were some people climbing up a hill to go stargazing (the stars were quite beautiful). Tanner decided to climb up the hill with some acquaintances, and Madeleine climbed up shortly after him. We somehow met up at the summit. We then stayed up on that hill looking at stars and had "deep philosophical conversations" (there were deep ones and also ones talking about Disney songs) with friends until it was just a few of us left. Then we decided it was too cold to stay up any longer (Madeleine argues that Tanner borrowed her pink blanket because he was too cold and that he was scandalized by the fact that he had to borrow a girl's blanket. Tanner has no memory of such things). While making the descent, we talked about movies (mostly Mulan and The Lord of the Rings). When we got back down to the main lodge, we continued talking about Poland and Dragons. We finally decided to go back to our cabins after a night of amazing conversations, but Tanner desperately wanted to continue to get to know this amazing, intelligent, beautiful, and funny woman, so he asked for Madeleine's phone number. He just wanted to be friends ;) And the rest is history...
