How We Met

Everything Happens for a Reason

Andrew and Sam are firm believers that there is a reason for everything that happens throughout the course of their lives which is why they both believe their lives led them to The University of Mount Union despite having plans to attend elsewhere. On the very first day of their Freshman Year, Sam met AJ on the sidewalk awaiting a ceremony to begin where their initial conversation was FAR from romantic (or kind - to say the least). Time moved on and they found themselves in the same class where Sam knew AJ as the "kid who answered every question” and AJ knew Sam as the “girl who sat in the back corner.” As you can tell, things were going LOVELY. But as their initial year at Mount Union continued, they found themselves in the midst of Greek Week where AJ's Fraternity (Phi Kappa Tau) was paired up with Sam's Sorority (Alpha Chi Omega). Sam and AJ's relationship continued to grow for the remainder of the year and they eventually found themselves in the Summer of 2015. AJ asked Sam to be his girlfriend (quite cheesily) at 5:00 in the morning of June 5, 2015 and they've been together ever since.

The Proposal

"What Are You Doing Down There, Pal?"

In December, AJ sat down with his family and eventually calmed his nerves enough to meet with Sam's family to tell them he truly loved Sam and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. In the roller coaster that was his emotions that day, Sam's family and father gave him his blessing and that's where the story truly starts. On a Saturday afternoon in January, while we both still attended Mount Union, AJ met with the jeweler to pick up Sam's ring, but we all know Sam, she had to ask where AJ was going and why was he meeting with a jeweler. Well, AJ thought quickly on his feet and was able to assure Sam he just wasn't ready yet and could not afford a ring during college. Not a day went by without Sam asking about the jeweler or if AJ was wanting to marry her (even though he already had approval from both families). Once the rings were picked up and paid for from the jeweler, AJ's wild imagination began sputtering, how was he going to ask Sam to spend the rest of their lives together without giving it away... On Sunday, February 18th, 2018 at Burton Century Village, AJ's family and Sam's family met to take some senior picture practice shots and some new family photos. Honestly, the perfect cover up, right? After about an hour and many locations throughout the village later, AJ gave his mom the signal that he was ready; ready to commit the rest of his life to the love he had always asked for. Shannon, Sam's mom, lined the two of us up alongside a fence that overlooked a rural landscape, told Sam to turn around, and there AJ was. On a knee, shaking, short of breath. "Samantha Brooke Huffman...will you spend the rest of your life with me?" Without hesitation, Sam looks down and before she said "Yes", with tears in her eyes, looks down at AJ and says "What are you doing down there, pal?"
