Maddy's Perspective: We began talking right before Christmas of 2020 and quickly made plans to meet up with each other to go rock climbing. After a cancelled date due to a Christmas Eve blizzard, we both thought things may fizzle out before they began. Jon planned on taking a "week long trip" to his sister's house, which I thought was code for "Good luck, I'm about to ghost you!" Instead, Jon continued to keep in touch while he was out of state, making sure to check in with me every day. I seem to recall lots of angry text messages about how much he disliked stretching. Karynn, Jon's sister, later said that Jon was smiling at his phone a lot that week. After New Year's, we met at Twin Cities Bouldering for our first date. Being the overthinkers we both are, the long lead-up to the first date gave us plenty of time to overanalyze what might come. I'm sure that we both considered canceling, but I'm glad I showed up that night. Jon was so excited to share his passion for rock climbing with me, a hobby I had always wanted to pursue. It was immediately clear how thoughtful and patient he was with his ability to show me different skills and techniques, and be patient while I tried to figure out how to do them. We continued going on dates for about a month, before Jon said "uh can I call you my girlfriend" and I said "uh yeah sure okay". At the time, I didn't really know what it would mean to be someone's girlfriend. I hadn't ever officially dated someone. At worst, I thought maybe things would fizzle out in a few weeks. From that day on, Jon didn't let a day go past without being sure to either call or see me in person. It became exceedingly clear as time went on how thoughtful and caring Jon is. Little did I know that by agreeing to be Jon's girlfriend, I had also. found my best friend (shh... don't tell my mom, or my sister, or my brother that (or like 72 other people, look we're all best friends okay)). Jon's Perspective: Maddy and I found each other online during the Covid-19 pandemic. After a few days of chatting back and forth, I built up the courage to ask her on a date to the rock climbing gym as it was one of the few places open at the time. Unfortunately, the day I chose wound up being a night-long blizzard that canceled those plans. Our situation was further put off by my visit to my sister Karynn's place for Christmas and New Year's, but I made it a point to keep our contact going during that week because I didn't want to lose our momentum. I honestly told myself that if it did not work out with Maddy I would be taking a break from the scene. Once we were able to meet on our re-scheduled rock climbing date it was so exciting to finally see each other face mask to face mask. We had a great time getting to know each other in person and so we continued going out together. Talking to Maddy just came easy for me. We were really receptive to each other and respected what the other had to say. I could feel myself falling for her. Fast forward a couple of weeks, and I'm already feeling compelled to ask Maddy to be my girlfriend. Before introducing her to my roommates at the time I felt it was appropriate to find out where we were at, and after our conversation, we were on the same page that we were a couple on January 17th, 2021. Not much later as we were driving to pick up our dinner from Boca Chica, as I was smacking my lips from drinking a soda, Maddy said to me, "Jon, I love you, but you need to stop making those noises.", and I couldn't help but say that I loved her back. I wouldn't have our story start any other way, and I can't wait to see where life brings us.
