Freshman year of college at Ohio State, my roommate and I were getting a group of friends together from their floor of the dorm one Friday night, including our friend Joyoshri. Conveniently, Joyoshri had some high school friends coming to visit that weekend and didn't have any set plans. Of course they were all welcome, so Joyoshri introduced me to Maddy, and I thought we hit it off pretty well! I asked her if she wanted to get breakfast the next morning. I guess she was “here to visit friends,” so she politely declined. For two years of occasional messages and a brief meetup at Cedar Point, Maddy was simply “Joyoshri’s friend.” Two years later, however, Maddy made a surprise appearance at Joyoshri’s Halloween party (which I almost didn't attend) and flipped my world upside down… this time she took me up on my 2-year-old offer to get breakfast! We started calling, and I knew I had to see her again soon, but she went to school all the way in Toledo and I didn't have a car yet… so I invited her down to Columbus after finals for a true first date. We went to a rooftop bar/restaurant to enjoy tapas and paella overlooking the sunset. After dinner, we went to the Columbus Zoo and braved the cold to experience their holiday light display. Two years of driving back and forth between Columbus, Toledo, Cleveland, and Sandusky, we took the risk of moving away to New Jersey to finally be in the same location, and the rest is history.

My freshman year of college I went to visit my high school friend Joyoshri (one of my bridesmaids!) at Ohio State. While visiting I was introduced to Joyoshri's friend Dan and his roommate. We hit it off on the visit chatting as we walked around campus to get to the OSU game that weekend. Dan even asked me to go to breakfast with him the morning before I left. I turned him down as I was just in town to see my friend - not hang out with some guy, even if we did get along great. Two summers later, Joyoshri and I went to Cedar Point. Since Dan was working there, he met up with us. Dan and I once again got along great, and I really enjoyed getting to hear what he had been up to the past year and a half. As Joyoshri and I were driving home she asked if I’d ever date Dan. Once again I said no; it just wouldn’t work because he was too far away. That fall Joyoshri invited me to a halloween party she was having that she invited Dan to as well. I was looking forward to catching up with him again but didn’t think much more would come from it. At the party we chatted till the very end where once again Dan asked me on a breakfast date. This time I decided I’d give him a chance and said yes. The next morning we went to mass, got panera, and agreed to keep in touch more once I left. From there we started texting and shortly after Dan called me to ask me on a real first date before he went back to Chicago after finals. After that date, Dan and I spent many weekends between Toledo and Columbus and Chicago and Cleveland making the most out of the visits we had with each other for the rest of our time in college. Then came graduation and moving to New Jersey, the first time we had dated in the same place!
