I guess you could call us high school sweethearts, in a way. When we met, I was a junior in high school. I was the varsity swim star and band nerd, and she was the brilliant and beautiful senior cheerleader. I wish I could say we met under the Friday night lights and went to prom together and have been in love ever since, but our fairy tale started a little different. Why? We lived 350 miles apart. The true story of how we met happened behind a screen. We met online and maintained a friendship, despite the distance. We never really planned to meet in person until one day the opportunity arose when I got accepted into Texas Tech, where she was a student. Despite our worries of the other being a serial killer, we decided to meet at my freshman orientation and immediately hit if off and became the best of friends. She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. Once we confirmed that we weren’t going to kill each other and end up on a dateline special, we decided to slowly kill our lungs by chain smoking cigarettes late into the night while we talked about anything and everything. We also went to concerts together, gave each other relationship advice, and shared our love for words and the world. After 2 years of a wonderful friendship where we learned everything about each other, we admitted our feelings for each other and jumped right in. We got engaged at Six Flags in Arlington this past October after 4 years of love, and even though we didn’t fall in love in the style of an old 80’s rom-com, we still get to have that unbelievable happy ending. We can’t wait to love each other, and our little fur baby, Pizza, forever.
