Kansas City has implemented a mask mandate at indoor public accommodations. However, the mandate does not extend to private spaces or events, like a wedding at Magnolia Urban Garden. If you feel safest wearing your mask, please do! We want everyone to feel as comfortable as possible. The ceremony itself and cocktail hour will be held outside in the garden. Inside at dinner, we are at about half of the venue's capacity, so things shouldn't feel too cramped. Mike & Macyn are vaxxed and proud, and encourage you to get jabbed too!
Mike and Macyn’s first date was a three-hour Andy’s-custard-eating-marathon in mid-February of 2015. After ice cream, neither of them were ready for the night to end, so Mike took Macyn on their first adventure to Capen Rock Park. Amid concerns that he might be a serial killer, Macyn followed the bearded man up the rocks to the top of the cliff wearing his over-sized winter gloves. Mike remembers the exact rock where the two sat that first night. Macyn remembers a fleeting thought that one day Mike might propose to her on top of this very cliff. The two were almost inseparable throughout their time at Mizzou. One snow day, Macyn and her roommate Emily watched Mike from the window while he built a snowman on her car. Macyn was sure: This guy was special. In July 2016, Macyn studied abroad in Prague and Mike moved to Milwaukee to pursue his doctorate in counseling psychology. Macyn remained in Columbia to finish her senior year. In March 2017, Mike returned to CoMo and asked Macyn to join him in Wisconsin. After graduation, she took a job in advertising and moved north in May. Since then, the two have climbed mountains (well, mountain, singular), traveled internationally, survived a global pandemic (and a postponed wedding), moved to Oklahoma and added another fur baby, Ford, to their family.
During a trek home from Florida, Mike made a sneaky stop in Albany where he asked Macyn’s parents for their blessing on their upcoming engagement. They (enthusiastically) agreed, and gave Macyn’s grandma Vonda’s ring to Mike. On October 26, Mike and Macyn were traveling back to Columbia where Mike was allegedly going to be featured on a podcast for Mizzou Athletics. Macyn dropped him off at the MATC and went to the mall, despite Mike’s soft encouragement to get ready for dinner plans. When she picked him up after the “recording”, Mike wanted to visit Hinkson Creek because of a strange phenomenon where the river was purple. Once on the bridge (and when Macyn realized the river looked just fine), Mike dropped to one knee and proposed — in that same park where the two had rounded out their first date.
When COVID-19 forced the couple to postpone their dream wedding, they were heartbroken. With all the uncertainty about well, everything looming, they decided there was no reason to wait to get married. In a private ceremony with just their parents and witnesses present, Mike and Macyn tied the knot on their original date, 06.06.2020. It was beautiful and wonderful and nothing liked they'd pictured. But the story doesn't end there! The happy couple cannot wait to hug, high-five and dance with family and friends at a ceremony and reception on August 8, 2021.
