From Mackerel to Marriage

They say, "When you know, you know." Neither of us had put much stock in that phrase, but as soon as we met, we both knew this was it. This was our last first date. Our first date was simple. We went to a place that sounded like it would be fun—a pie and wine bar in Woodinville. It was, unfortunately, deathly quiet, and the only other patrons were single men over 50. So we decided to head somewhere more our speed: a Korean restaurant where we ordered grilled mackerel, sundubu jjigae, bibimbap, and all the banchan. We connected over our shared history in kitchens, our love of food (particularly seafood), camping, and, most importantly, our dreams of a slow, simple life in the Pacific Northwest. (That last item made it very easy to convince Yaron to move to Whidbey.) Over the past two years, we've shared some incredible highs—new jobs, memorable travels, and plenty of belly laughs—as well as some difficult lows—the loss of Bolt, illness and injury, and the occasional bout of existential dread. Through it all, we've been grateful to have each other. Last December, Yaron decided to pop the question at ZooLights at the Portland Zoo. He hadn't planned on doing it that evening, but when we rounded a corner and saw a giant display that read "Will You Marry Me?" in Christmas lights, and he happened to have the newly resized ring in his pocket, it felt like fate. How could you not take advantage of a moment like that? Mack, of course, said yes—and here we are! Having you here to celebrate this special moment means the world to us. We're so grateful for the love and support of our family and friends, and we can't wait to celebrate the beginning of this lifelong journey and the start of our next chapter with all of you.
