Olivia and Sam first knew each other as teammates at Bowdoin College, where they both ran cross-country and track. Rumor has it that Sam caught Olivia's eye in the fall of 2012, after his impressive 5th place finish at the cross-country conference championships (Olivia finished a respectable 20th). Sam admits that he was interested in Olivia for a while, too, before they first became involved. Between classes, athletics, and college parties, the beginnings are mostly a blur… Fast forward to 2013, after Olivia had graduated and moved to Boston, and Sam had started his senior year at Bowdoin. They decided to take a break during this transition, but proceeded to complain to mutual friends about not being together. With some encouragement, they finally agreed to give dating a chance. It wasn't the ideal time to start a new relationship. Later that year, Sam graduated and accepted a job in Portland, Maine, while Olivia remained in Boston. They dated long-distance for several years, each encouraging the other to pursue their goals. Being apart wasn't easy, but it taught them to appreciate the moments they spent together, and to build a partnership based on communication and trust. In 2019, a week before Valentine's Day, Sam surprised Olivia by proposing as she sat on the couch with a cup of tea. He later recounted that the diamond ring he designed for her was sitting in a drawer 'unutilized', and that he was too excited to wait another day!
